White-label partner vs freelancer: which should your agency use?
The white-label partner vs freelancer question comes down to how much work you have, how much you want to manage, and how much your clients should rely on one person.
The short version
A freelancer is one person you manage directly. A white-label partner is a team that delivers finished work under your name, so you manage the result instead of the process. Neither is better in every case.
How they compare
Control
With a freelancer you usually choose the tools, review each step and direct the work. A partner agrees on the outcome and handles the steps. You give up some day-to-day control to save time.
Capacity
One freelancer has one person’s hours. If they are ill or busy, your client waits. A partner can cover gaps, which matters once you have several clients depending on the same work.
Accountability
Both can be reliable. What differs is what happens when they are not: with a freelancer the work stops, with a partner there should be someone else to pick it up. Ask any option who covers the work if the main person is unavailable.
Margin
Freelancers are often cheaper per hour. Partners often cost more per job but save your own team’s time on briefing, checking and fixing. Work out your margin both ways before you decide. Our guide on how to price white-label work shows how.
Client relationship
Whoever you pick should stay out of your client relationship unless you ask. Check this in writing before you start.
When a freelancer is the better choice
- You have one small, steady job and already know a person you trust
- You want to direct every detail yourself
- The work needs a specialist you can’t find in a partner
When a white-label partner is the better choice
- You want finished work without managing the steps
- You have, or want, several clients needing the same kind of work
- You can’t afford the work stopping when one person is away
A safe way to test either
Start with one client and one small job. Agree the scope, price and timing in writing, and judge the result before you give out more work. That is how we suggest you work with us too: see our white-label services.
